  Characteristics of the Natural Ecosystem
The ecosystem of the northern area of the civilian control line including the DMZ is largely affected by the Taebaek and Gwngjusan ranges. The East region of Gimhwa, Wando is formed with 1000m mountainous district or higher. The west region of it is the start of Cherwon plain and till western sea it is the continuous plains and hills.

And whole of this place is the area is the miraculous area where a marine climate of eastern Taebaeksan range, a continental climate of western Taebaeksan range and again a marine climate of western sea meet. Ecologically, this is the place where temperate zone of middle district connected to the south and temperate zone of northern part connected to the north meet.

That is, as this is becoming the boundary of the system of the plant distribution, this is the region of the existence of various plants. To this, the region showed various inhabitation of plants & insects and also the density of them are high, the region showed the rich Biodiversity in the past. It is possible to assume that the closing generic character of the civilian control zone can restrict the interference of human toward the nature.

This is probably expected that the ecosystem of this region to be conserved better than anywhere else. But according to the various academic investigations, this region is not all that well conserved in nature especially for in forest. According to nature degree of greens in adjacent area of DMZ reported by the Ministry of Environment, 88.4% of Gangwon region is level 7, that is said to be constitution of trees younger than 20years old) or below.

The whole of Hyangrobongsan range shows the level 9, that is said to be the constitution of trees 50 years or older, but it is only 1.5% occupancy of the total. Especially the level 2 or below regions are more that 51.2 % showing the discontinuance in development of the forest ecosystem. This data shows the forest ecosystem of the DMZ including the northern area of the civilian control line is maintained as the disturbance state in large range.

But the past farmland and villages were left alone for ling time so that a lot of these regions' ecosystem of marsh are well developed. The area from west Gimhwa to the low reach of Imjingang is the typical region for this well development. The marsh place is the good earth for various plants to live on, by various microorganism helps the propagation and increases the soil creature, becoming the good inhabitable environment for amphibians and etc. naturally.
