Outline

This gun is located in the center of Gangwon-do, and approaches Hoiyang-gun to the North, Inje-gun to the East, Chuncheon-si to the South, and Hwacheon-gun to the west. This gun is located in inland mountain village surrounded by a beautiful landscape with rare creatures. It is between 127° 51' ~ 128° 06' degree East Longitude, 38° 01' ~ 38° 18' North Latitude, 700.80km² (square kilometers) in area, and 24,027 people in population. It consists of 1 Eup 4 Myeon and the seat of a county office is in Yanggu-eup Ha-ri.

Natural Environment

Several connected hills of the Taebaeksan stretch from south to north. In the eastern part, Dae-am mountains connected to Gachilbong, Dae-u, and Dosolsan faces Soyang lake, in the middle there is the Bibongsan, in the west Eo-eunsan connected Baekseok and Samyeongsan. This gun is entirely surrounded by steep inland mountains. Suipgang and Seogang flow down to the south to Paro lake among the hills. In the northwest, Geumgang based on Geumgangsan flows down to Bukhangang, and Soyang river flows down to the west in the southern part. Yanggu basin is relatively broad Plain field and Gokjeo field is narrow in the area. Geographical ground is mainly metamorphic sedimentary rocks and granitic gneisses of the Arch eozoic and the Proterozoic era. However, coastal basin of the east is an eroded basin entered since the Mesozoic era. The soils are mostly residual soils and rich alluvial deposits only exist a little around rivers. This gun that is a boundary of the western and eastern plants system has rare creatures because it occupies watershed of the Taebaeksan. A coniferous forest a little exists due to destruction by the Korean War. Paro and Soyang lake as artificial lakes leaded Fish-water fishery and are used for waterborne transportation as a worthful resort.

The typical continental climate is characterized by basins and over 1,000m high mountains. The annual mean temperature is 10.5°C, The mean temperature in August is 25.6°C, in January is -6.6°C, and the temperature contrast between summer and winter is great difference. The annual precipitation is 974.5mm. It is relatively lower than other areas.

Travel Guide

This gun is a great resort with scenic beauty such as the mysterious land of Yangnampalkyeong, soyang and Paro lake and in one and half hour distance by inland water transportation from Chuncheon-si. This gun has a summer resort such as Yuinseok War Monument and Departed spirit turret at Jinsan Bibongsan in Yanggu, Baekseoksan as the biggest Korean habitat of Yeolmokeo, the coastal basin as a Oval granitic basin, Dutayeon, Byeokchoyeon, Jikyeon falls, Palrangjikyeonso, and Hugok mineral springs. The vegetation and the finny tribe of the place is a good research object zone.

There are many famous fishing spots around big lakes in the area such as Soyang and Paro lake. Particularly, Sangmuryong and Seoho fishing spots that are 20km apart from Yanggu-eup are famous for crucian carps. Since the wharf of Yanggu has been opened the regular ferry service is served every hour from Soyang Dam of Chuncheon to Inje via Yanggu. Though many tourists rush in crowds due to the convenience of waterborne transportation, accommodations are limited and private residences are recommended. To attract more tourists in the future, if a Paro lake travel circular road is established to connect between Yanggu and Wontong this gun will be a famous international resort connected to the east coast travel zone.
