Outline
  This gun is located in the Northwest of Gangwon-do.
It faced to Yanggu-gun in the East, Cheorwon-gun and Gyeonggi-do Pocheon-gun, Gapyeong-gun in the West, Chuncheon-si in the South, and Cheorwon-gun in the North.

It is between 127° 26' ~ 127° 55' degree East Longitude, 38° 00' ~ 38° 40' North Latitude, 909.45km² (square kilometers) in area, and 25,916 people ('1999) in population.
It consists of 1 Eup 4 Myeon and the seat of a county office is in Hwacheon-eup A-ri.

  Natural Environment
  Mountains surround most areas in the Gun. In the east, the sheer Taebaeksan spread with other mountains such as Samyeong, Il, Jaean, and Suribongsan.
There are Gwangdeoksan in the west, Obong, Yonghwa, Hwaak, and Maebongsan in the south, Gwangjusan connected to Daeseong, Jeokgeun, Baekamsan in the north.

Generally northeast area is high but southwest side is lower. Bukhangang Passes though eastern part of the gun to the south and branches of the stream are Mayeon and Bongogang.

  Since Hwacheon dam on Bukhangang has been constructed The dimension of plain fields in the area are extremely limited due to artificial lake 'Paro'. The typical continental climate is characterized with big temperature contrast between summer and winter due to the high inland mountain zone.

The annual mean temperature is 9.4°C, The mean temperature in January is -7.2°C, in August is 26.4°C, and the contrast between summer and winter is over 33°C. The annual precipitation is 1,037mm.

  Since Hwacheon dam was constructed this is a lake resort with a dense forest and valley around Paro lake. There are many other famous places such as Yonghwasan, Mireuk rock, Squirreldo, and Tongyeongsa mineral spring water resort around the lake.

Paro lake is a famous tour ferry resort with 70 different types of fresh water fishes in the lake. Paro lake as a main stream of Bukhangang was selected a national resort to be concentrically developed for 8 years from 1984 to 1991.

Moreover, the Hwacheon Bridge will be constructed to connect between Hwacheon and Chuncheon, and 9.1km road will paved from Hwacheon to

  Guman-ri. Finally, circulation travel zone, Chuncheon- Paro Lake-Yonghwasan, will be developed to connect Chuncheon and Seoul zone.
