It is a 'Gun' that is located in the Northwestern part of Gangwon-do and Yeongseo area. It approaches to Yanggu-gun in the East, Gyeonggi-do yeoncheon-gun in the West, Hwacheon-gun and Gyeonggi-do Pocheon-gun in t he South, and the Korean armistice line in the North direction. It is between 127° 07' ~ 128° 53' degree East Longitude, 38° 06' ~ 38° 18' North Latitude, 899.82km²(square kilometers) in area, and is a Gun of 54,040 people ('2000) in population. It consists of 4 Eup 3 Myeon Including 5 Myeon in the North of non-official civilian restricted area, and the seat of a county office is in Galmal-eup Sin Cheorwon-ri.

Natural Environment

The Taebaksan pass through the Northeast of Cheorwon-gun and the center is placed in the Chugaryeong-gok. In the Northwest area, Basalt belched of The Pleistocene of the Cenozoic era fourth generation shaped 200~50m high Cheorwon lava ground, and in the Southeast, around 1,000m mountains there are connected to the Taebaeksan. There are some representative mountains such as Oseong, Daeseong, Baekam, Myeongseong, and Geumaksan. Hantangang in the middle of the gun flows into Imjingang via Namdaecheon from North-northeast to south-southwest. Hantangang has distinctive pillar-shaped joint and perpendicular cliffs due to great erosion.

A continental climate is characterized with big contrast between summer and winter climate due to high inland area and it is one of three high-rain areas in Korea. The mean temperature in January is -7.9°C, in August is 24.4°C, the annual mean temperature is 9.5°C, and the annual precipitation is1,366mm.

Travel Guide

Cheorwon-gun is a tourist resort as a natural park with natural beauty gifted including Sundam, Sambuyeon falls, Gungyeseongji (a site of castle), and Goseokjeong originated by the eight view of Cheorwon in the Hantangang area. This area was decided to develop as a national resort due to short distance to Seoul and now has been loved by tourists. There are many famous places scattered such as Sambuyeon falls, Yonghwa reservoir, Sundam, Goseokjeong, Jiktang, Maewoldae from the starting point Galmal-eup Sin cheorwon-ri.

Furthermore, Cheorwon area is close to the Korean armistice line with the War monuments because it was the main battlefield of the Korean War. This is used for anti-communism education.
