The number of butterfly species is decreasing

Despite no species of butterfly has been newly found or found to be extending its habitat, there are a number of butterfly species that are clearly indicating reduction in its numbers. Due to the changes in the natural environment near DMZ area, both the population and the variety of butterflies are decreasing here.
  Poor existence of insects

There have been only two species of Cicindelidae, in all the areas near DMZ, except for Baengnyeongdo and Daecheongdo, for last four years. Cicindelidae is a predatory insect; so they need generous supply of the prey, other insects. Therefore, it seems that the population of insects in these areas is not rich enough even to provide enough prey.

Possibility of changes in vegetation

Among the 41 leaf insects, 30 were newly found species. Leaf insects are insects, which eat plant leaves, and they have the most immediate relationship with the vegetation of an area. A bean-leaf bug, a harmful insect to crops, is now widely spread in central-western areas. These facts indicate the possibility of changes in vegetation in the areas near DMZ, and, also, the insects which originally inhabiting in our land are being substituted by those which are strong against human interferences.
