Geumgangsan Tour to unofficial ordinary South Korean started from Nov. 18, 1998 was an impressive incident since Korea has been divided in 1945. Mt. Diamond Tour was an outcome of efforts of both the South Korean government and an enterpriser, Jeong Ju Young, the founder of "Hyundai". Jan. 1998, Jeong Ju Young of Hyundai visited North Korea to sign to the Mt. Diamond Joint Development Agreement. Feb. 14, 1998, the chairman of Hyundai Jeong Mong Heon contacted the North Korean governments in Beijing, China and Jun. 23, Hyundai announced that Mt. Diamond Tour was signed. Aug. 6, Department of Unification of South Korea approved business cooperators to Hyundai merchant ship, Hyundai construction, and Mt Diamond Development to Mt. Diamond Tour. Since Oct. 13, 1998, a construction ship left for North Korea to construct Jangjeon harbor, Nov. 14, a ferry called Geumgangho was tested and finally, Nov. 18, Geumgangho departed as a first time. Feb. 28, 1999, there was the ceremony for the completion of "the Onjeongri rest place" and "the Mt. Diamond Cultural Center". However, after seven month from the first day of Mt. Thus, Mt. Diamond Tour was temporarily closed, but Hyundai and the North Korea government discussed and agreed to re-open the tour with travel detailed rules and personal security agreements in Beijing. The five days Mt. Diamond Tour details that ferries from South Korea to Jangjeon harbor located near Mt. Diamond in North Korea and then arrive on the mountain by small ships at daytime, and return to the main ferries at night time to sleep and to prevent contact with North Korean people. North Korea receive US$ 942,000,000 from Hyundai for 6 years and 3 months up to Feb. 2005. However, Mt. Diamond Tour is now in the moment of crisis due to financial problems of Hyundai that is a main projector and irrationality of prices to North Korea. This situation should be watched out due to the South Korean government's supports and the public opposite opinion to discontinuance of the tour. |
