   Separated Families
Since the Armistice Agreement in July, 1953, there have been many contacts between the two Koreas to resolve the matters regarding separated families and people who abandoned their hometown in the war. The first meeting was held, according to the Armistice Agreement, during December 11th, 1953, and March 1st, 1954, through the committee organized to resolve this matter. The second meeting was held through the International Committee of Red Cross. In 1954, south Korea requested the International Committee of Red Cross of helping south and north Korea to resolve the matters regarding separated families based on the Resolution about mediating the reunion of separated families selected in the 18th Red Cross International Conference held in 1952, in Canada. The International Committee of Red Cross accepted this request and suggested that they visit south and north Korea to research the exact condition. However, this was rejected by north Korea, and other alternatives, such as exchanging information, were suggested. In November, 1957, north Korean Red Cross returned information about 337 people out of 7,034 inquired, and south Korean Red Cross announced to north Korean Red Cross that 14,012 out of 14,032 inquired came to the south in their own will.
