  Battle Situation
Chuncheon/Hongcheon battle was a defensive battle of the 6th Division of South Korean Army, which was stationed north of Chuncheon and Hongcheon of mid-eastern front at the beginning of Korean War, near Chuncheon, Eoronli, Hyunlee, and Malgogae against the 2nd Division and the 12th Division of North Korean Army reinforced with one tank regiment.
Particularly, the 12th Division of North Korean Army was so proud as to call themselves as an elite division. The 6th Division of South Korean Army was more prepared for war than any other divisions because the newly appointed division commander Col. Kim Jong-Oh delivered firm moral education and stirred up the morale of troops 2 weeks before the outbreak of war. Particularly, the division commander prohibited the Sunday outing of soldiers and ordered to reinforce the watch according to a report on th
movement of the enemy from a forward unit on the day.
The 2nd Corps of North Korean Army committed the 2nd Division to north of Chuncheon and ordered to occupy the city of Chuncheon on the day of the outbreak of war, and committed the 12th Division to advance to Inje-Hongcheon road to intercept the retreat of major forces of South Korean Army, and finally ordered a guerilla unit in Odaesan to assist the advance of the 12th Division. In this battle, the 6th Division of South Korean Army had developed a defensive line for 6 days by making the most out of geographical advantages of Soyanggang and Malgogae favorable for defense, and they stroke a considerable blow to two North Korean Army divisions, and therefore, the advance of the 2nd Corps of North Korean Army to Chuncheon-Hongcheon axis was delayed. In particular, the 6th Division of South Korean Army gave an exterminating blow using 105mm howitzers in Surisanmaek battle, the first close combat. At this time, the 6th regiment of the 2nd Division of North Korean Army had 50% of damage and many artillery and heavy firearms were destroyed. However, as Seoul was surrendered and the military headquarters moved to Suwon, the 6th Division of South Korean Army withdrew to Chungju via Hoingseong, Wonju, and Jecheon on July 1. With this battle, North Korean Army had greatly frustrated in their original operation plan to detour and to stir metropolitan areas, and South Korean Army had time to form the Han River defensive line.
